Radiological Detection System (RDS) is a universal radiation detection system. The main feature is the Base Unit, which detects Beta and Gamma radiation, and acts as a common interface for six probes that are used for specialized radiation detection applications.

One of the system’s defining features is its smart probe technology.

Any RDS probe can be connected to any Base Unit without recalibration.

45 hours of stored data easily transferable to a computer for further analysis.

The Base Unit is ergonomically designed and can be used with protective gloves.

Stealth mode and headphone functionality for use in combat situations.

Known as the AN/PDR-120, and also available through NATO Stock Numbers.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Sensitive Gamma Probe detects photon (gamma and x-ray) radiation. Its high sensitivity makes it ideal for detecting low levels of radiation. Paired with the RDS Base Unit, the Sensitive Gamma Probe is ideal for search operations to locate gamma radiation sources. The probe measures the exposure rate over a broad range of energies.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Neutron Probe is designed to detect neutrons in the energy range from 0.025 eV (thermal or slow) neutrons to 15 MeV (fast). The Neutron Probe has advanced solid-state neutron detection capability. The detector is surrounded by a High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) material that efficiently slows high-energy neutrons down to a detectable level. The rounded shape allows for sensitivity to neutrons coming in from all directions. The orientation plate on the side of the probe is to be used as a positioning aid against flat vertical surfaces.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Field Instrument for the Detection of Low Energy Radiation (FIDLER) Probe is used for low-energy X-ray and gamma radiation detection. The FIDLER Probe detects and distinguishes between low-energy X-rays and gammas. It simultaneously records data over four separate energy windows, by use of a multichannel discriminator. Analysis of this information can enable the detection of materials commonly used in weapons of mass destruction. The FIDLER Probe monitors all four of the following energy windows simultaneously. The Base Unit Home screen has the ability to display one or two energy channels at a time.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Beta-Photon Probe detects beta and high energy photons (gamma and x-ray) radiation. The Beta-Photon Probe is part of the RDS probe family and is used with the Base Unit for radiological detection operations. It is designed to be held in the operator’s hand or attached to the Telescoping Probe Handle. The end cap is removable for increased sensitivity to beta radiation and low-energy x-rays. The Beta-Photon uses a common probe cable to attach to the Base Unit where data is stored. Crosshairs on the outside of the probe housing show the center lines of the detectors. The probe has two different detectors for low to high-range dose and dose rate measurements.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) ABG Pancake Probe is used for detecting alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. It is designed to be held in the operator’s hand for beta/gamma contamination monitoring work. The probe uses a Geiger-Mueller (GM) Pancake Tube to provide a 15.5 cm2 sensitive detection area in a small and lightweight probe. The unit is supplied with a Detector Protective Cover, a removable ‘clip-on’ thin shield for protecting the front face of the probe. An optional aluminum-clad lead shield is available for performing radiological detection operations in high background radiation areas.

The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Alpha-Beta Probe is used for the measurement of surface contamination survey meter of both alpha and beta radiation. It has dual detection capability, having both a phosphor scintillator and a zinc sulfide PMT. The probe can discriminate between Alpha and Beta simultaneously. Designed and tested for military ruggedness to meet both military/defense requirements and industrial applications.
